Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Fans

The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an approximate net worth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Recent Controversies and Public Spotlight

This event follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent figure in a streaming series that explored his influence in building the Dallas franchise into the globe’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its modern-era championship drought.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing effort to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their status or wealth.
