Per information released by Israel, a minimum of 98 detainees from Palestine have lost their lives during detention since October 2023. An advocacy organization located in Israel has reported that the actual figure is likely significantly higher, due to hundreds of disappeared detainees in Gaza.

Report Findings

An updated study recorded fatalities attributed to assault, medical neglect, and malnutrition. Researchers used official data requests, autopsy findings, and testimonies with legal representatives, activists, family members, and witnesses.

Israeli authorities disclosed detailed information limited to the opening period of the conflict. Over this period, government statistics reveal an record fatality rate among Palestinian prisoners, equating to a life lost each 96 hours.

Israeli defense forces most recently revised records on custodial deaths for May 2024, and correctional authorities during September 2024. Researchers identified a further 35 fatalities in custody subsequent to these periods and verified them with Israeli authorities.

Although the aggregate figure of casualties recorded being much greater than earlier projections, it likely does not reflect the complete extent of Palestinian casualties, as stated by the leader of the prisoners and detainees department.

“Even though we are presenting proof for a greater figure of deaths than once estimated, this is not a full picture,” he explained. “We are certain that there are even now people who lost their lives in confinement that we are unaware of.”
