The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
