The severe weather led to the evacuation of approximately 350,000 residents, delivering heavy downpours and damaging winds, particularly between Guangdong's Wuchuan and Hainan's Wenchang. Boat transport were halted and air travel disrupted at Haikou Meilan airport. Storm Details The typhoon, the 21st typhoon of 2025, had sustained wind speeds of 94mph and poured more than 50mm of rainfall in six hours in Chongzou and Qinzhou. The city of Nanning also experienced high rainfall totals. The storm prompted China's top-tier red alert, with disruptions in Zhanjiang, where businesses, transportation systems and roads were shut. In Hong Kong, 100 flights were affected and 30 cancelled. Future Projections As the typhoon advances inward towards Cao Bang province in the neighboring country, it is projected to weaken into a tropical depression with 89km/h winds but will persist to bring heavy rainfall. Vietnam's northern regions could experience 130-150mm on the following day, increasing the threat of flooding and landslides. The weather pattern is anticipated to move towards Yunnan region in China, where additional intense rain is probable. Global Weather Events At the same time, Hurricane Priscilla developed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on the weekend, first as a storm system. It prompted a weather alert for south-western regions from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita on the start of the week. In the early hours of Sunday, Priscilla was about 305 miles from a Mexican cape with sustained winds of 105km/h. It intensified into a hurricane in the evening, when wind speeds reached at 75mph. Although unlikely to hit the coast, Priscilla is expected to produce dangerous waves and rip currents as it tracks northwestward along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Elsewhere, Cyclone Shakhti has developed as the initial post-season storm system of 2025 in the a body of water, causing an warning from the national weather agency for Maharashtra. On Sunday, the cyclone was 130 miles southeast of a location in Oman with maximum sustained winds of 103km/h. Shakhti, which has moved in a southwestern direction and weakened, is forecast to recurve towards the east into the the sea. Rough seas are likely to continue along the coastal stretch and intense rain is anticipated in shoreline areas including Dwarka, Jamnagar and Surat.
