Week 5 NFL Shocker: Eagles Fall to Broncos while Bills Succumb to Patriots

Football Game

The last two unbeaten teams in the NFL watched their flawless starts broken during the fifth week as the Philadelphia Eagles along with Buffalo Bills endured shocking losses on their own turf.

The Denver Broncos evolved from underdogs to front-page news thanks to an spectacular comeback victory against the reigning Super Bowl title holders Philadelphia, prior to boarding a flight for Sunday's overseas contest.

The New England Patriots then traveled to Buffalo and ended the Bills' undefeated start with an impressive victory of their own in their first primetime game in a full year.

The Baltimore Ravens experienced a third consecutive defeat - their defensive woes could be terminal for their postseason aspirations - while Dallas, Indianapolis, and Detroit celebrated blowout wins on yet another eventful Sunday.

Broncos Defeat Title Holders

Not only was it defeating the reigning title holders, but the manner of their 14-point comeback that made the Broncos' win by 21-17 in Philadelphia such a signature achievement.

The Eagles had secured 10 games consecutively, 12 in a row at home and 20 out of 21 overall before Denver's signal-caller Bo Nix orchestrated two touchdowns in five fourth-quarter minutes and a last-minute field goal.

The Eagles are now 4-1 but there is a big worry about the offence, which ranks as one of the worst in the NFL. Wideout DaVonta Smith stated they are not "on the same page" with QB Jalen Hurts.

The Broncos' defensive unit, which tackled Hurts six times, had a lot to do with the outcome, and, together with a genuine franchise quarterback in Nix and elite coach in Sean Payton, they have all the ingredients to launch a serious challenge.

Denver meet the New York Jets at Tottenham Stadium on Sunday.

Primetime Patriots Shock Buffalo

If Denver's win was almost half expected, few predicted New England marching into Buffalo and beating Josh Allen's Bills, but they did so with huge character.

A first primetime game for the rookie quarterback delivered a breakout performance as he directed a decisive scoring drive in the final moments to secure victory 23-20.

The young QB was tough and made the right throws at crucial moments, several to former Bills receiver Stefon Diggs, who had a big game for Mike Vrabel's team.

The head coach was anticipated to improve the situation in New England, but a win like this came sooner than most expected.

Patriots Defense

The Patriots defence bottled up the Buffalo Bills attack during their upset away win.

Ravens Play-off Dreams Dashed?

This campaign is becoming a nightmare for the Ravens, who were without a host of key defenders as they were dominated 44-10 by Houston's team.

It matched their biggest loss at home, and dropping to 1-4 for the season means one of the pre-season Super Bowl contenders have only a slim chance of reaching the play-offs.

Baltimore are currently 4-11 playing without star QB Lamar Jackson, who was injured, but it is a historically bad defensive unit that is the primary concern - for a team that have been synonymous with defensive toughness historically.

Houston strolled to victory as the Ravens became the first team in the Super Bowl era to allow at least 37 points in four of their first five games. Their campaign is already in tatters.

Lions, Bucs and Colts Reach 4-1

The Lions' running back duo Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery registered six points in the same game for the 14th time - a shared NFL record - as Detroit defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 37-24.

Victory made it four wins consecutively for the league's top scorers the Lions, but none against teams with a winning record.

A more surprising 4-1 team are Indianapolis. With Jonathan Taylor scoring a hat-trick in their decisive rout of the Las Vegas Raiders and quarterback Daniel Jones appearing as a transformed player, they will be a tough match for any team.

Tampa Bay entered the four-win group with a thrilling 38-35 victory in Seattle in which both teams traded nine touchdowns in 10 impressive drives before Seattle cracked first with a late interception.

The kicker kicked the game-winner with the last kick of the contest for his second occasion this season. Each of the Bucs' victories have been clinched in the final moments.

New Orleans and Tennessee Get Help for Initial Victories

The way New Orleans and Tennessee Titans started this campaign, they required assistance to secure their initial victories, and they received ample due to some farcical mistakes from the New York Giants and Arizona.

Following a strong opening from first-year player Jaxson Dart, New York made five turnovers - including one decisively taken back for six points - while also allowing Rashid Shaheed to score on an 87-yard reception as the Saints prevailed 26-14.

Arizona were more disastrous as they squandered a substantial advantage mainly due to two massive mistakes.

First, Emari Demercado unexplainably dropped the football just before reaching the end zone for a long touchdown.

Worse followed when Arizona intercepted Cam Ward near their own goal line, then lost the football across the goal line for Tyler Lockett to recover as Tennessee snapped a 10-game slide with a 22-21 win.

Tyler Lockett

Tyler Lockett scored among the most bizarre scores we'll see this year.

That left the Jets as the sole victory-less team left in the NFL after their bruising 37-22 defeat by Dallas.

Jayden Daniels became the initial athlete in NFL history to surpass 4K through the air and 1K on the ground in his first 20 professional contests as he came back from being hurt to steer Washington to a notable 27-10 victory at the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rico Dowdle was the standout performer for Carolina with 206 rushing yards in their thrilling 27-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
